I’m a little late getting this out (by social media standards), but it’s really never too late for news like this: The Zydeco Bay the Bay Festival happened a week ago yesterday, on October 12th and my feet are still movin’! Don’t worry if you missed it: the City of Sausalito, California obviously knows the value of cultural/musical diversity so I’m sure this Louisiana flavor will be invited back next year to enliven Dunphy Park.
If I’d known it was happening I would have told y’all…trust me. I just happened to be down in Sausalito last Saturday AM having a cuppa with my friend (and PSM Blog Follower) Doreen Gounard when we heard the sound check as we walked past Dunphy Park in the heart of Sausalito. Doreen said, “Oh yeah…that’s the Zydeco Festival going on today to raise money for music in the schools!” To be exact: it was a fundraiser for Marin City’s Performing Stars of Marin Blues in the Schools program.
This one day, free community event brought some of the Bay’s best Creole Zydeco sounds to Sausalito. There were live musical performances by Grammy nominated Andre Thierry and Louisiana artists, Sean Ardoin and Koray Broussard.
Zydeco is a way of music and life from southwest Louisiana French Creole culture, explored through the flavors of food, family and dance. I had so much fun dancing to this wonderful music with the bay as a backdrop. The music is dominated by he button or piano accordion and type of washboard and blends many types of dance: waltz, shuffles, line dances, two-teps, blues and rock and roll. This must be why Zydeco attracts such a wonderful mix of folk.
The weather was perfect. As usual, enjoy the story through pictures ~
