FILM: Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People
Had the pleasure and good luck to see this film while in DC for A.J. Verdelle’s 12-13-14 party, in fact went to the screening with A.J. I thought the pacing could use some pep, but the content more than makes up for that. Filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris was inspired by Deborah Willis’s book, Reflections in Black. His compelling exploration of forgotten images of black America has been missing from the cultural conversation and includes the work of Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simposon, Anthony Barboza and a host of others. Thrilled to see this fine work hitting a wider audience.

For the past 170 years, pioneering African-American photographers have recorded the dramas and aspirations of generations. The film traces the spiritual transformation from slavery to economic mobility and social stability, and examines how these photographers helped their communities we claim self worth and humanity. ~ KQED
