HBO FILM~ Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley
November 18, 2013
Saw this film recently at the Mill Valley Film Festival. You do not want to miss it!
If you have HBO: pop the popcorn and set the DVR. Whoopi has put together a beautiful documentary paying tribute to the comedic genius, trailblazer, Jackie “Moms” Mabley. Many of us who grew up in the 60s remember sneaking to listen to our parents’ LPs of Moms’ raunchy, raw humor that cut across any line America drew ~ social, economic, political, sexual and most definitely racial ~ using brilliant satire and wit.
Born Loretta Mary Aiken in 1897, Moms dressed like somebody’s grandmother on stage and film. Clever costume—it made her safe and after winning your trust she proceeded to say exactly what was on her mind in that signature raspy, razor sharp voice.
(If you’re like me and don’t have HBO, I bet you won’t have to look far for a friend who does: offer to bring the pizza and make a party of it. Otherwise, this will no doubt show up on Netflix eventually.)
HBO, Monday, November 18th at 9PM
This has always been my favorite quote from Moms:
Thank you, Anita…I’ve just saved it on Netflix. Enjoy!
